What is Visual Feedback Therapy

Visual Feedback Therapy using Mirrors was developed by Vilayanur Ramachandran, one of the world's leading neuroscientists.

This brilliant but simple idea was to help alleviate "phantom limb" pain. Amputees can still experience often vivid and painful sensations in the location of a limb which has been amputated

The concept behind mirror work as I have understood it is that since the messages to the brain have been scrambled by a trauma to the nerves, what is happening is much like an electrical short circuit. Things are firing but the signals are confused. If the brain can be tricked visually into thinking the injury has healed, or in the case of an amputee that the limb is in place, there is a possibility that some of the scrambled messages can be untangled helping to facilitate movement and some pain relief.

This device can help many other painful conditions which affect one hand or foot.

The mirror is placed vertically, so that the uninjured hand is reflected. It is placed in a way that the illusion of two healthy hands, or feet is created.
