The Mirror and Visual Feedback Therapy - Sunny explains

The Mirror Box

In the Autumn of 2007 during a course of Occupational Therapy  (OT) I  was introduced to Amy, a Hand Therapist at the clinic who had some experience of using Visual Feedback (Mirror Therapy) as part of the treatment regime for hand injuries.

I found it absolutely miraculous.

It is such a simple exercise and can be done at home as a part of an exercise regime worked out for the patient by their Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.

The technique of using mirrors was developed by an eminent neuro scientist Vilayanur S. Ramachandran to help alleviate "phantom limb" pain. Amputees can still experience often vivid and painful sensations in the location of a limb which has been amputated.

The concept behind mirror work as I have understood it is that since the messages to the brain have been scrambled by a trauma to the nerves, what is happening is much like an electrical short circuit. Things are firing but the signals are confused. By creating an illusion of two healthy limbs, the brain can be tricked by this 'deception', thereby creating a possibility that some of the scrambled messages can be untangled helping to facilitate movement and some pain relief.

It really worked for me and I needed to have a free standing mirror that I could use on a table, so I designed one and decided to have it manufactured. It is available to buy in the UK on Amazon.
